The Anti-waste NYC-based fashion label Official Rebrand (OR?!), which originated in the Berlin underground in 2016, has not forgotten where it came from. The brand’s founder and creative director, MI Leggett, strives to collaborate with and draw inspiration from the scene that bore their creative vision. The up-cycled clothing, transformed via paintings and other alterations by MI, is all sustainably sourced from under-appreciated garments. We love this, but what really gets us Berlin Verschenkbox Trash Rats swooning is OR?!’s commitment to gender-free expression. Their pieces of scavenged couture allow the wearer to go beyond typical unisex androgyny and effortlessly move to and from any point on the gender spectrum.
As Berlin coalesced around a new normal, MI contacted Tegwen Evans from Blue Star Project Space to collaborate remotely on a photo shoot. These two creative powerhouses set to work casting three talented artists integral to the Berlin art scene as models: Bráulio “Deepneue” Bandeira, a DJ; Zoey Lee, a filmmaker; and Riley “Gutter Gucci'' Davidson, a drag clown performer. Teaming up with stylist Weihan Chang, they began collaborating with the models to create a concept that both showcased the clothing and celebrated their unique expressions of self. Utilizing personal artifacts ranging from DJ equipment to sex toys, the artists bare themselves to the viewer. With a focus on framing and form, photographer Tegwen translates the artists' individuality into image.
